LYNCH

david-lynch2.jpgLYNCH is a feature length documentary following David Lynch as he works on his numerous projects as filmmaker, painter, sculptor, video blogger and mentor to a large bunch of interns. But it seems odd to me to refer to this as a documentary, the description "non-fiction film" seems better suited. And though this is essentially a character study I'd rather see it as a fancy bowing to the cult of the personality that is David Lynch.

Don't get me wrong. There may be no better way to present the man.  His enigmatic, idiosyncratic manner is almost hypnotic as we watch Lynch tell stories, make jokes and be strangely - and I mean strangely - charming. His humour is bent and he has a smile that has so many different levels of meaning.

Frankly, you get no better idea of the man that is David Lynch after seeing this film and I'm pretty sure that is the point. His persona is impenetrable to his thoughts and artistic intentions but you can't help trying to pry in there and see what makes him tick besides the continuous coffee and cigarettes. The failure to understand him better seems integral to the pleasure of the film.

The film may well be watching David Lynch go about his .com projects, preparing for exhibitions of paintings and photography (images of abandoned Polish factories) and seeing the early stages of the production of Inland Empire, but before the film is over you come to realise that the film itself is a David Lynch project. LYNCH, also titled LYNCH (one) - I guess we can expect a LYNCH (two) - isn't about David Lynch, it is David Lynch.

Though LYNCH has had the rare theatrical screening it is currently available in the five disc boxset The David Lynch Collection comprising Eraserhead, early career works, his davidlynch.com pieces and the animated Dumbland.
