PAUL NEWMAN 1925 - 2008

So Paul Newman has passed on.

There is little here we can add to all the accolades he has been recieving as actor, car racer, humanitarian and all round good guy.  He deserves them all.

So here at Planet we'll salute him for portraying some of the coolest guys ever to tread through the celluloid from Hud Bannon in 1963 to Sully Sullivan in 1994.  And though he'll always be Eddie Felson the hustler and Butch Cassidy the outlaw we'll best remember him as Cool Hand Luke.

So to toast the memory of Paul Newman I'd suggest a glass of very fine whiskey or make an excellent bolognaise with one of his sauces.

LYNCH

david-lynch2.jpgLYNCH is a feature length documentary following David Lynch as he works on his numerous projects as filmmaker, painter, sculptor, video blogger and mentor to a large bunch of interns. But it seems odd to me to refer to this as a documentary, the description "non-fiction film" seems better suited. And though this is essentially a character study I'd rather see it as a fancy bowing to the cult of the personality that is David Lynch.

Don't get me wrong. There may be no better way to present the man.  His enigmatic, idiosyncratic manner is almost hypnotic as we watch Lynch tell stories, make jokes and be strangely - and I mean strangely - charming. His humour is bent and he has a smile that has so many different levels of meaning.

Frankly, you get no better idea of the man that is David Lynch after seeing this film and I'm pretty sure that is the point. His persona is impenetrable to his thoughts and artistic intentions but you can't help trying to pry in there and see what makes him tick besides the continuous coffee and cigarettes. The failure to understand him better seems integral to the pleasure of the film.

The film may well be watching David Lynch go about his .com projects, preparing for exhibitions of paintings and photography (images of abandoned Polish factories) and seeing the early stages of the production of Inland Empire, but before the film is over you come to realise that the film itself is a David Lynch project. LYNCH, also titled LYNCH (one) - I guess we can expect a LYNCH (two) - isn't about David Lynch, it is David Lynch.

Though LYNCH has had the rare theatrical screening it is currently available in the five disc boxset The David Lynch Collection comprising Eraserhead, early career works, his davidlynch.com pieces and the animated Dumbland.

Planet's Blog

If you're reading this then you are at the bottom which means you are at the beginning.

Welcome.

This is Planet Blog where we hunt for cool and interesting things related to literature, film & TV, art & design, music and anything else we find neat within the realms of pop, sub and alternate culture.

Now there seems little point in talking about things most people are already talking about so we'll concentrate more of our efforts on things not picked up by the mainstream. Why talk about the latest Hollywood blockbuster when we can get excited about a new Korean monster movie? Why talk about a new Dune novel when we can talk about a novel called Go-Go Girls of the Apocalypse? Why talk about a new Coldplay CD when there are other unique talents worthy of a listen.

In short, what excites or intrigues us is what we'll put into Planet Blog whether it be relevant news, hip speculations or nifty discoveries.  Like a cookbook called The Veganomicon. Even if you like your bacon there is something cool about having a book in the kitchen with that title. Don't you think? Well, maybe that's just me then. But hey, there'll be a bit of maybe that's just me from time to time and that's a good thing. If you have an opinion about that or anything we write about we welcome and encourage your feedback.

So the blog ball is rolling. Let's roll with it, shall we? I expect a fun ride.

Cheers

Robin Pen
